Cabin Air Filters
Your car heating and AC systems see it all on a daily basis -- dust, dirt, pollen, other allergens, even insects, you name it. Those pollutants only accumulate, throughout the systems' ducts and on their vents. When they do, they restrict airflow, and that invariably causes all sorts of problems. Luckily, your vehicle has something to catch most of them before that happens: a cabin air filter.
However, no cabin filter is permanent, per se. The one in your vehicle will fill up with muck eventually. You'll be able to tell when it does -- air quality in the cabin will worsen, your heater and air conditioner will start to malfunction, and it'll get more difficult to maintain interior temperature. Your may even hear and feel your motor having to work harder than it should.
Luckily, when to replace a cabin air filter is easy to figure out. Just check your owner's manual's filter maintenance schedule. Of course, you can also look for the signs that it's time. They include:
- A Check Engine warning light on the dash
- Restricted airflow through the vents
- Dirty or stale smells in the cabin
- Brittle and/or gunky filter surfaces
When you do change your cabin filter, be sure you put in the genuine article. Your OEM makes one that'll fit your make and model, guaranteed.
